When the Blue Raiders of Newark, Ohio, march off to war against the Confederacy, Johnny Clem is allowed to join the company as drummer boy on the condition that he act like a full-grown soldier. Under the watchful eye of a rugged sergeant, Johnny not only stands firm in life-threatening battles, but steadfastly beats out a rhythm of courage, rallying the Union troops in the war's darkest hours.
