Description
In 1966, when his father's attempted suicide causes the ostracism of the family in their small Montana community, fourteen-year-old Nate copes with his sadness and anger by trying to win the school science fair. When Nate Chance arrives home from school, he sees two police cars and an ambulance in his yard. Before his mother can get him and his little sister, Junie, inside, another disturbing sight presents itself: His father, blood pouring down his face, is stumbling toward them, held up by two police officers. It seems that he has shot himself, but instead of taking his life, has only taken his sight. Home quickly becomes a different place. Junie stays curled up in front of the TV, watching perfect, fake families live perfect, fake lives; Nate's mom retreats further inside herself; and Nate's best friend can't look him in the eye. Only the promise of winning the science fair holds any hope of happiness for Nate. He's building a cloud chamber, the project that he and his dad had dreamed of working on together.
