Description
Description
A nostalgic, sweet, cultured and charming, timeless novel, with which a Jonathan Coe returns full of sensitivity and craft. At fifty-seven, the career as a soundtrack composer of Calista Frangopoulou, a Greek based in London for decades, not going through its best moment. Neither does her family life: her daughter Ariane goes off to study in Australia, apparently not making her sad the same way it makes her mother sad, and her other teenage daughter, Fran , is pending termination of an unwanted pregnancy. While her profession corners her and her daughters, determined or hesitant, begin to make their way on their own, Calista remembers the moment in which everything began for her; July 1976, when in Los Angeles, and ostensibly underdressed for the occasion, she shows up with her friend Gill at a dinner held by an old friend of her father: a seventy-something film director neither of them knows anything about, and who turns out to be Billy Wilder; Wilder, who, with her elusive bonhomie, ends up hiring Calista as an interpreter to assist her in the filming of her new film, Fedora, which will be shot in Greece the following year...
