Description
"This is the story of three musicians who stepped off a front porch in the Appalachian Mountains and into musical history. The Carter family's first recordings, made in the years before the Depression, are still beloved in the 21st century. While laying the foundation for American country music with their sturdy mountain voices and energetic playing, the Carters contributed hundreds of songs to the folk music canon in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. Many of the songs they recorded are still being performed today, and echoes of their music can be heard in the work of artists from Woody Guthrie and Elvis Presley to contemporary singer-songwriters and roots rockers too numerous to name. This first family of country music also made an enduring contribution to the music industry, selling hundreds of thousands of records and helping to build a publishing empire by copyrighting nearly every song they recorded whether they wrote it or not. Songs of home, family and love, murder ballads and scaffold songs, disaster songs, songs of mourning and plaintive gospel tunes; Civil War ballads, cowboy ditties and African-American blues -- all became Carter Family songs. And like the brightly colored scraps of cloth that make up a quilt, together these songs form a tapestry that has become the shared heirloom of musicians and music lovers around the world"--,Provided by publisher.
