Gr 3-5Alter traces the history of such gatherings, discussing their growth from animal exhibitions to competitions, the addition of domestic arts, and the development of carnivals and sideshows. The Ice Palace in St. Paul, MN, the Corn Palace in Sioux City, IA, and the Spring Palace in Fort Worth, TX, are featured as examples of unique constructions that sprang up in association with fairs in the 1880s. One chapter tells about the various kinds of local, county, and state fairs that exist today. The last chapters briefly cover world's fairs and expositions, their development and decline. The text is free flowing and readable. Words that might be unfamiliar are printed in bold face and defined in the glossary. A variety of full-color and black-and-white photos and reproductions correlate with the text. Oddly, in describing the Centennial Exhibition held in Philadelphia in 1876, the author mentions that Arizona was not yet a state. There are 10 other states that had not been admitted to the Union at that time. Nonetheless, this is a solid addition, especially where fairs are an integral part of the family experience.Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, KS (c) Copyright 2010. Horn Book Review
A history of fairs in the United States traces their evolution from small animal exhibitions in the early nineteenth century to modern day events featuring midways, junk food, and famous entertainers. The most engaging section concerns the 1893 Columbian Exposition, the 1939 New York World's Fair, and other major fairs that served as cultural barometers of their time. Archival photographs, many in color, accompany the fast-moving text. Bib., glos., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
