Description
pt. 1: This program explores how Jung, the son of a minister, developed his pagan vision of reality, and how he attempted to reconcile science and religion. Topics discussed include the collective unconscious, the dual personality, and the detachment of humans from their individual "stories" as cause of mental illness. In a candid interview, Jung disputes Freud's theory that sexuality is at the root of all mental illness, and explains how Freud's intransigent attitude toward new theories ultimately ended their personal and professional relationship. -- pt 2: In this program, Jung worked through 67,000 dreams with his own patients before solidifying his theory of dreams as the mirror of the collective unconscious. He moves forward in his search for the roots of his conflict with Freud, and in the process formulates major theories: psychological types (extroversion/introversion), and the concept of the individual psyche as a self-regulating system. -- pt. 3: Deals with the life and philosophy of Carl Gustav Jung in his later years; discusses his attitudes toward Christianity and death as well as the concept of the "shadow." Includes interviews with Aniola Jaff, editor of his autobiography, and C.A. Meier, a former colleague.
