Booklist Review

Plumptre presents biographies of 70 designers and innovators prominent in the development of garden design from 1600 to the present. They include Sir Edwin Lutyens, Gertrude Jekyll, Vita Sackville-West, Penelope Hobhouse, Frederick Law Olmsted, William Kent, Lancelot Brown, and Charles Bridgeman. The book is arranged in periods, each with an introductory essay. This garden history of nearly four centuries covers 350 gardens and landscapes with an Anglo-American emphasis and doesn't attempt to cover continental Europe and other parts of the world. Many lavish color photographs complement the engrossing text in this comprehensive study of the evolution of gardens. ~--George Cohen

Library Journal Review

There are so few collective biographies of garden designers that this volume definitely fills a gap. Seventy garden designers, both amateur and professional, are reviewed in profiles averaging two pages each and including illustrated examples of works that have influenced the evolution of landscape and garden design. The book covers 1600 to the present and focuses mostly on British and American designers. The influences of one designer upon another (e.g., Frederick Law Olmsted's chance meeting with A.J. Downing, which changed his career) and of Great Britain and the United States upon each other (e.g., John Bartram's and David Douglas's plant collecting in America and Thomas Jefferson's visit to Europe) are also explored. Each designer's publications are also listed. Plumptre's previous garden history books are still popular, and this new title will be an attractive and useful addition for larger horticultural collections.-Laura Lipton, Miller Horticulture Lib., Seattle (c) Copyright 2010.
