Description

This title examines the US Army Special Forces, also known as the Green Berets. Readers will learn that commandos have taken part in every war in American history, from the Revolutionary War to World War II to today. The history section explains how President John F. Kennedy granted them their trademark berets while preparing for a visit to the Special Warfare Center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, under the command of Brigadier General William P. Yarborough. Training and organization of team members such as weapons sergeants, communications sergeants, medical sergeants, engineering sergeants, commander, assistant commander (warrant officer), operations/intelligence sergeant and non-commissioned officer in charge (NCOIC) are also discussed. Readers will also learn about special forces air equipment, such as high-altitude low-opening (HALO) helmets, MC-4 parachutes; ground equipment, such as GPS locators, night vision goggles, M-4 carbine rifles; and water equipment, such as the re-breather, kayaks, and inflatable boats.

School Library Journal Review

Gr 5 Up--Different branches of the U.S. military and associated careers are highlighted in this six-book series. Each book provides a history of the branch, as well as common tools used by military professionals, a glossary, online resources, and an activity challenge related to the activities and duties of each role. The strength of this series is that the information is clearly organized and presented, which will benefit readers who are interested in military careers but who might be reluctant readers. The downside to this series is the lack of gender diversity represented in the photographs. Overall, the series offers a wealth of information about different careers but falls short of accurately representing different identities in the military industry. VERDICT This series might supplement a larger collection but offers limited diversity representation.
