Based on the famous novel by writer Frances Hodgson Burnett, Shirely portrays Sara, the pampered daughter of a British officer. Left in a boarding school when her father goes off to war, her world is turned upside down when he is reported dead. Destitute, Sara is made a servant at the school, yet she refuses to let her spirit be broken.

Bessie and Winston Winters are a married couple who are both coaches. Their mission is to whip their college football team into shape. Just in time, they discover Amos, a hillbilly farmhand and his sister. But Amos' ability to throw melons enables him to become their star passing ace.
