Seijun Suzuki

Set in the 1920s, the film focuses on the relationship between Aochi, a Japanese professor and Nakasago, a former colleague. Aochi is called on to testify for Nakasago, who is suspected of being a serial killer, and as the two former friends become more involved, the professor gets a glimpse of Nakasago's nomadic life. The men end up marrying women who strongly resemble each other, and their marital relations become twisted together.

High schooler Nanbu Kiroku yearns for the prim, Catholic Michiko, but her only desire is to reform Kiroku's sinful tendencies. Hormones raging, Kiroku channels his unsatisfied lust into the only outlet available: savage, crazed violence.

In this jazzy gangster film, reformed killer Phoenix Tetsu's attempt to go straight is squashed when his former cohorts call him back to Tokyo to help battle a rival gang. Includes video interviews with the directors and an essay by film critic Howard Hampton.
