Sam is now Professor Ryan, teaching pathology at London University but she still consults on unusual cases which demand her highly developed professional skills and tenacity. A helicopter crash, a gangland killing and a cinema fire are a few of the files that draw her in while she also finds the line between passion and professionalism blurring.

Archie's brother Paul returns to Glenbogle and is enlisted into helping to run the estate. Although this brings him into conflict with Archie and Lexie, it also allows Archie to think about his role and the world beyond Glenbogle.
