Annie is a young girl from a working-class neighborhood who suddenly finds herself working as a nanny for a wealthy family in Manhattan's Upper East Side. Between catering to the every whim of her employers and their precocious son and falling in love with their gorgeous neighbor, Annie tries to figure out what she wants to do with her life.

Mr. Magorium owns the most magical store in the universe, where all of the toys for sale are alive. The eccentric owner of toy store surprises Molly, the shop's awkward and insecure manager, by turning over ownership to her. Molly appears to be a reflection of the people who run it. Henry is a detail-oriented accountant assigned the task of assessing the Emporium's monetary value.

Richard Dunn, a no-hit wonder of a novelist, is sent to Long Island by his wife, who expects him to get cracking on his next novel. Dunn isn't totally alone, though.
